Movie and Documentary Selection

The evening's film segment will feature a documentary about Baby Boomers. This generation has had a profound impact on the modern world, and the documentary will explore their history, challenges, and contributions.

A recommended documentary is Boomers: The Retirement Gamble.

Will your IRA or 401K accounts provide a secure retirement? FRONTLINE examines the retirement industry's big business, raising concerning questions about how America's financial institutions safeguard our savings. (Aired 2013)

Trillions of dollars in Americans' retirement savings are invested in accounts managed by banks, brokerages, mutual funds, and insurance companies. However, whether your IRA or 401K will guarantee a secure retirement is largely uncertain. In the 2013 documentary “The Retirement Gamble,” producers Martin Smith and Marcela Gaviria expand on reporting from the groundbreaking series “Money, Power and Wall Street,” revealing how fees, self-dealing, and kickbacks generate significant profits for Wall Street while jeopardizing the prospects of a secure future for individuals. The documentary investigates who truly has the consumer's best interests at heart and whether there is a more effective way to manage our retirements. It offers insights into the social movements, economic changes, and cultural trends that defined the Baby Boomer era.

Alternatively, we could watch The Pension Gamble.

A 2018 documentary that examines the role of state governments and Wall Street in pushing America’s public pensions into a multi-trillion-dollar deficit.

Producers Marcela Gaviria and Nick Verbitsky, along with correspondent Martin Smith, explore how state governments have deferred pension contributions to cover shortfalls and engaged in risky Wall Street investments. Smith delves into the intense battle over pensions in Kentucky, a state whose once-robust pension system for its police, firefighters, teachers, and other public workers became one of the nation’s most underfunded.

Choosing a documentary that resonates with our shared history will make the evening more engaging and meaningful.

How to Prepare and What to Expect

To make the most of this gathering, I suggest a few simple preparations:

  • RSVP to confirm your attendance so I can finalize the dinner arrangements.

  • Feel free to bring any memorabilia or stories related to the Baby Boomer era to share during the evening.

  • Dress comfortably but neatly, suitable for a relaxed dinner and movie setting.

The event will start with dinner around 6:30 PM, followed by the documentary screening at 7:00 PM. There will be time for discussion and socializing after the film.

This plan allows us to enjoy a full evening without feeling rushed, creating space for connection and reflection.
